The Centre Pompidou-Metz
Opened in 2010, the Centre Pompidou-Metz has become one of the symbols of the new city. Its timber frame covered with a white membrane, designed by Shigeru Ban, evokes a vast Chinese hat. Inside, temporary exhibitions take you from modern art to contemporary design in tall, light-filled galleries. A stimulating venue for a curious date, nicely extended by a coffee on the upper floor with a view of the cathedral.
The Imperial Quarter
Around the station, the Imperial Quarter, built under the German Empire between 1902 and 1918, lines up grand stone buildings, turrets and Art Nouveau details. Metz Station, often cited among France’s finest, imposes its neo-Romanesque silhouette and its great clock. On Avenue Foch, bourgeois villas follow one another: a perfect setting for a walk away from the old centre.
Opera, museum and market
On Place de la Comédie, the Opera-Theatre, one of the oldest still active in France, programmes ballet, concerts and plays. A few steps away, the Cour d’Or Museum tells Metz’s story from Antiquity to the Middle Ages in a fascinating maze. The covered market near the cathedral delights food lovers. On Lyad, Metz members share their favourite outings; it is up to you to invent one together.
